The REAL elixir of life…

Water. The elements oxygen, and hydrogen. Without this magical substance, life on Earth as we know it would not exist. All living organisms contain water and rely on it to survive. Us humans are made up of about 65% of the stuff! Water covers 70% of Earth’s surface and exists as a liquid, gas and a solid. As a tasteless, odourless (almost colourless – hint of blue) liquid, it is described as a universal solvent for its ability to dissolve many substances. We use it to extract and process minerals, grow our food, transport goods over vast oceans, it is a source of food, we play many sports on ice, snow and water. Without it, we could not produce and process most of the products we create and use daily. We use precious water to keep clean, wash our clothes and flush our toilets. Think about how many times a day you wash your hands…

In last week’s blog, we looked at the building blocks of life on earth as a foundation to then build upon when looking into some of the topics that influence us as human beings in this day and age. So in this article, we will dive in to some further detail about the REAL elixir of life, water. For us to BE WELL, we need to consume between 2 and 3 litres of water per day. Dehydration, even if it is mild and goes un-noticed, can have negative effects on the body, and mind, including mood, digestive issues, cognitive and brain function, nutrient depletion and skin problems. Here’s some of the reasons WHY we need to stay properly hydrated…

  • Lubricates joints, spinal cord and tissues
  • We need water to perspire, urinate and defecate
  • It aids digestion and helps to prevent constipation
  • Aids in cognitive function and improves mood
  • Via the blood, it carries nutrients and oxygen around the entire body
  • It helps create saliva
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Maximizes physical performance when doing physical activity
  • Keeps our eyeballs from drying out!

Water is our planet’s most valuable commodity, both to the environment itself, as well as all living organisms. Many of our fresh water supplies have been polluted over the years hence the rise of people drinking bottled water. This however, creates another problem, plastic pollution. And it is really all human beings’ right to have access to clean drinking water. Water is a critical component in all chemical reactions in our bodies, so it’s important we drink not only enough each day, but it must be clean and free of impurities, and if we have access, good quality. Not all water (bottled, filtered or from the tap) is made equal. Completely pure water (just H2O) is perfectly fine to drink, but what is more beneficial to us, is water that contains minerals such as magnesium, potassium and calcium.

  • Boiled Water – One of the safest and most effective ways to purify your water.
  • Reverse osmosis – Water that has been filtered of practically all impurities. It is so pure that it can in fact be cooled past freezing without actually turning into ice. However all the minerals are also removed.
  • Distilled Water – Produced by boiling water and collecting the condensed steam and turning that back into water. Also removes all impurities, as well as the good stuff…
  • Spring Water – This is a broad term when it comes to “bottled water” but it should be from a natural, clean, underground spring/source.
  • Hydrogen Water – Water that contains hydrogen molecules that act as powerful antioxidants. Many studies on humans are inconclusive as to the benefits it may bring. You’ll need to weigh up the cost/value.
  • A drop of Iodene/bleach – If drinking while travelling or adventuring in nature, take Iodene or bleach along and add a few drops to the stream/river water to purify it.

While “special” water may provide some marginal benefits, as long as you’re getting enough, clean water each day, that’s the most important thing. (In hot countries or when exercising, add some lemon and salt/electrolytes to your bottle) Water is precious and here on the island at the moment, we are on water rations as it’s been a long hot dry season, not enough rain to top up supplies. So in trying to be a bit more sustainable, even if you have plenty water coming out your taps, here are a few tips to help save water!

  • Fix minor leaks around the home/office
  • Carry a re-fillable bottle with you
  • Turn tap off when you brush teeth or shave
  • Do full loads of laundry with cold water
  • Water your garden early in the morning or late evening when its cooler
  • Install a rainwater catchment system from the gutters/roof to use as grey water
  • Only run the dishwasher if you have a full load

Hopefully you have gained a new perspective on our most precious resource water and can share this with friends and family. So stay hydrated folks! Till next week… be well, be healthy xxx Kirst

You are the stars wrapped in skin!

No, I’m not kidding… When you break down life into its simplest form, using the elements, we are indeed just a combination of the 6 elements: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus. So human beings ARE made of stardust! In today’s blog we will also look at the historical development and knowledge of the elements to get a clearer picture of ourselves, humanity and life on Earth through deeper understanding and different perspectives.

The science stuff…

Most of us will have learned basic chemistry/the periodic table of elements in school, so let’s first look at the building blocks of matter and life through the “western” science perspective, which has developed into what we learn in school/university today as physics, chemistry, math, biology, medicine and astronomy.

The definition of science: systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.

Prior to the scientific revolution in Europe in the mid 1500’s, much of what we understood about the natural world and the universe were assumptions, theories, ideas or ancient wisdom passed down from generation to generation or through various religions and tribal belief systems. The improvements and developments of the printing press gave rise to a whole new era in the sharing of knowledge and information. So, from the modern era of science and technology we have a very technical, systematic and methodical approach to how we dissect, discover and look at the natural world and beyond. It is however important to keep an open and flexible mind, even when we have “evidence or proof” to back our theories up, as we continue to evolve and discover new things along the way. And it’s all interconnected in some way!

97% of us human beings are made up of the 6 main elements as mentioned in the intro paragraph above. (CHNOPS – an easy to remember acronym) These elements are made up of varying combinations of atoms (which are protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons), which form chemical bonds which then make up molecules, crystals and thus the various elements. The ability of atoms to attach and detach with each other is responsible for most of the physical changes observed in nature. Now, even smaller than electrons, neutrons and protons are quarks, of which there are 6 types. Quantam physics/theory is the study of quarks and many of the things we cannot yet see or explain fully, such as consciousness… super interesting stuff indeed! Let’s now go back in time to see how it all began.

Alchemy

The medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy that focused on the attempt to change less valuable metals into gold, to find a universal cure for disease, and to discover a means of prolonging life indefinitely is called alchemy. It was practiced in much of the ancient world, from China and India to Greece. Alchemy migrated to Egypt and was later revived in 12th-century Europe through translations of Arabic texts into Latin. Medieval European alchemists made some useful discoveries, including mineral acids and alcohol. The revival led to the development of pharmacology and to the rise of modern chemistry. The gold-making processes of alchemists were finally discredited, but not until the 19th century. (Merriam Webster)

The first written texts on alchemy date back to the first few centuries AD. Alchemy holds the ancient Greco-Roman belief that everything is composed of 4 elements: earth, air, water and fire. (ether came later) The elements were proposed to explain all the complexities of nature, the cosmos and life in its simplest form. Ancient alchemy has had a strong influence in modern-day science.

Central Africa

Over in Central Africa, in today’s Congo, the Kongo Cosmogram has existed for centuries, even prior to European contact in 1482. It is an emblem that represents their people’s understanding of creation and the cycle of life. At its 4 points, stand earth, air, water and fire. It shows the seasons, the 4 stages of life, the physical and spiritual worlds. An important aspect of Bakongo cosmology is the sun and its movements. Archeological findings in the US show evidence of slaves using the symbol, where it was carved in church basements and engraved on pottery.

Ayurveda – The science of life

This ancient 5000-year-old practice has its origins in the Indian subcontinent and is still practiced widely today in India and Nepal, where about 80% of the population report using it. The 5 elements of Ayurveda are earth, air, wind, fire and ether. One’s health outcomes and treatments are determined by keeping things balanced and in harmony. It denotes that humans are a combination of the 5 elements. You find out your combination/prakriti and this is then used as a guide to get to the root cause of ill health and disease, by understanding how these parts are at play. The doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) are associated with certain attributes.

Vata – Air and Ether (Dry, Light, Cold, Rough, Subtle, Mobile, Clear)

Pitta – Fire and Water (Hot, Sharp, Light, Liquid, Mobile, Oily)

Kapha – Water and Earth (Heavy, slow/dull, cold, oily, liquid, slimy/smooth, dense, soft, static, sticky/cloudy, hard, gross)

Traditional Chinese Medicine

In TCM, everything in the Universe from the smallest atom to a blue whale to the solar system itself, are said to be composed of some combination of the 5 elements: fire, earth, water, wood and metal. Early mention of the 5 element theory dates back to 300BC. The elements are associated with our health and wellbeing, energies, personality traits, emotions; with a deep connection to nature. Similar to Ayurveda, the practice looks for the root cause of disease. Today it used by many people in combination with modern medicine. Some of the contributions made by TCM include: updated data on toxicity, adverse reactions, quality assurance, and herbal medicine standardization. Herbal medicines as an alternative to antimicrobial resistance in prescription drugs.

Like in Ayurveda, you are looking to find harmony and balance within the system. Our Chi, our vital energy, guides our physical and mental/emotional processes and we work with it to maintain balance and equilibrium.

To wrap it up…

The creation of the Universe and life on Earth are one of the great mysteries of the world, and we human beings, out of our natural curiosity and will to live and thrive, will perhaps always be searching for the answer to this question. Will we EVER know? Do we NEED to know? You and I may NEVER know, but what DOES matter above it all, is how we live our lives, day to day. So, I’ll leave it here and let you decide what to believe in… All I wish for from us carbon-based lifeforms, is that we are kinder to each other, and to our Mother Gaia, as we are all interconnected!

Big love! xxx Kirst

Who are you, really?

Your vibe attracts your tribe!

You may have heard the saying: “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”

Tony Robbins takes this a little further and says: “The quality of your life is most often a reflection of the expectations of your peer group. Choose your peers wisely.”

We like to believe that we’re independent thinkers, making decisions and choices out of our own free will. We convince ourselves that our desires, dreams, aspirations, likes and dislikes come from our true authentic selves and “nobody tells ME what to do!” Well, unfortunately that’s not quite the case. Us humans are naturally social creatures, living together in large groups and societies, we certainly influence each other, both positively and negatively, consciously and subconsciously. Whilst it’s completely necessary to take cues from others in what would be acceptable social behaviour or engagement, we need to also be aware when are following the pack blindly, just to feel or be more accepted.

Nobody wants to be alone, alienated, outcast or unaccepted. Our families, friends, colleagues and community members are the people we turn to for guidance, support and help when we need it. We share, learn, love and laugh together through the good times and bad, your people are what makes life worth living! As grown adults we know that not all people are good or have your best interests at heart, so it’s really important that we continually check in with ourselves and foster a strong sense of discernment. If not, you will find yourself to be a reflection of others. So let’s first take a look at our nearest and dearest and see how much of an influence they have on you.

Go through the following questions one by one, taking time between each to reflect:

– Aside from family you live with, who are you hanging out with often?
– How do you feel when you’re with them, as well as afterwards?
– Do these people align with your morals and values?
– Do you feel valued, supported and loved?
– Are they negative more often than not, dragging you into their drama and problems all the time?
– Can you count on them to have your back?
– Are they honest and truthful with you?
– Do you trust them?
– Do your friends set high standards for themselves, are they inspiring, do they encourage you to grow?
– Do they walk the talk? Or are they full of empty promises and hot air?

Maybe you remember the movie “Meet the Fockers”… If you do, you’ll certainly know what I mean when I refer to “the circle of trust”! Make sure you’re choosing the right people to be in your circle. It’s far better having fewer, more authentic friends in your life than a whole bunch of acquaintances. Relationships take effort, investment of your time and energy. Be aware of energy vampires!

In the Harvard study of happiness (which has spanned over 85 years and involved over 2000 participants and 3 generations) the key factor that correlates with good living, is to foster good relationships. So, as we spend so much time with our friends (and family) and we understand how much we rub off on each other, it’ll serve you well to hold onto those that are in it for the long haul.

Others also associate your friends with you and if you feel unsure about them or worry what others may think of you, maybe that’s a sign you need different people in your life. What is also something to consider when it comes to all of this, is that you are not absolved from holding yourself accountable in the same way.

Moving onto other spheres of influence on our dreams and desires… We are manipulated daily by big brands through the algorithms of the media channels and social networks, actors, pop stars and sport stars . Selling you products and lifestyles and a perfect happy life! It all acts as a mirror, feeding back to you a warped reality, where the influencers “run the show”! Those with the loudest voices, sparkliest garments, fanciest things, big brands and connections drive the traffic, not necessarily those living in their truth. Every company in the world spends money on marketing and advertising, so know that it works, and has immense power over the narrative. Be wise to see past the smoke and mirrors, tinsel and tricks.

So how do we attract the right people into our lives?
How do we know who we really are?
How can we get back a little of what has been lost over the rise of the Internet of all things, big tech and convenience?
Surely what most seekers are looking for is a way back to wholeness…

We put down our devices. We find our Sangha. We choose to sit. And we become, together.
We surrender and come home to ourselves.
I practice not only for me. I practice for others.

Come home to your heart xx

Love Kirst

Ps: Be the best version of yourself, not a copy of someone else.

June 21 already! Seems like only last week I was writing here about new year resolutions, be they on January 1st or the Lunar New Year. And here we are at the Summer solstice (northern hemisphere, winter solstice if southern), where it is the longest (or shortest) day of the year.

Also in recent years a fresh bout of political opportunity was able to get the UN to make June 21 the international day of yoga.

Well here’s what matters on this day: the sun is in its full glory and you get to close a chapter, turn the page, and what comes next is written by you. Not someone else or some other group. You.

So those leftover resolutions can now maybe adapt to some midyear sun energy, whether you include yoga or not, and take hold of the reins, or pen, and move ahead.

Though this international day of yoga is highlighted for one day, the real power and benefit from an approach to yoga is regularity and consistency. Take advantage of the sun in all its glory on this day and move forward with whatever you feel you got stuck on, sidetracked from, lost focus or motivation in, and now renew.

Turn inward and access the light within. Then as you engage with the outer bring a joyful purpose. Let this June 21 (and everyday thereafter) be a day where you do not allow any input, person, activity, piece of news, to drag you down, trigger negativity.

Stay Positive
Be Enthusiastic

Paul Dallaghan’s expertise with breathwork, body and meditative practices comes from three sources: over 25 years of daily dedicated practice and teaching these techniques; immersion in the original culture through one-on-one direct training in practice and study of ancient texts; doctoral scientific research at a leading US university (Emory) on yoga and breath in terms of stress, health and aging. Paul occupies a unique space to impart genuine teaching and science on these practices, acknowledged by his teacher and lineage (Kuvalayananda) in India as a Teacher-of-teachers and a Master of Breath, identified to carry the tradition (Pranayama). This places him as the only master-level yoga and breath practitioner currently immersed in scientific academic research on breathwork, stress and health. His sincere and ongoing role is to teach, write and research to help put out experienced and authentic information on these areas in a world full of confusion and conflicting messages both off and online.

Radical Responsibility… Taking ownership of our wellbeing

In 2020 the global wellness economy was valued at 4.4 trillion US dollars (5% of global economic output). Personal care & beauty; nutrition, healthy eating & weight loss and physical activity being the top 3 segments. By 2025 (just 2 years away) this figure is estimated to increase to 7 trillion! Whilst this surge in growth over the next few years is seen as positive as people are paying more attention to their health, the sector will also be more competitive with even more choices available to us at the tips of our fingers through our smartphones. With all this choice and variety, consumers will have an even harder time making decisions on what, where and how to spend their hard-earned cash. While spending on goods and products will continue to grow, there is an increasing trend by consumers looking to spend more on wellness services that address physical and mental health needs.

Over the last few years, health and wellbeing has gained a much greater level of importance in our minds and our day to day living. The industry is certainly becoming more mainstream, and consumers are focusing on personalization, price and functionality to meet their health and fitness needs with a bigger focus on sustainability and authenticity from the brands they intend buying from. Consumers are researching and getting their information predominantly via Google and social media and are more willing to use digital/virtual platforms and apps to workout at home and track their health to build a solid routine. So, let’s look at some of the wellness trends for 2023

  • Exercise recovery
  • Spiritual wellbeing and meditation/mindfulness
  • Biotech wellness tools/apps
  • Micro workouts
  • Hot/cold therapy
  • Mouth taping/breathwork
  • Circadian rhythm and sleep health
  • Sober curious lifestyles/reducing alcohol consumption
  • Functional mushrooms
  • The importance of protein in the diet
  • Mobility training
  • Spending more time outdoors
  • Natural remedies and supplements

There are endless ways to improve our health and wellbeing and it will look different for each of us. It all depends on your starting point, your current state of health and personal goals and desires. Regardless of who you are or where you’re at, unless you take ownership of your health and become interested and engaged with the process, you’ll probably feel like you’re bouncing from trend to trend, not managing to get ahead, and thus not achieving a balanced life full of energy and vitality. It’s great to use apps, go for massages, follow a meal plan and seek the help of a coach/therapist/dietician, especially to get started, however, if you are simply relying on these things/people to tell you what to do, it will be much more difficult to keep up with once you’re on your own, and that’s when most people fall off the wagon so to speak and sink back into previous habits.

Your wellbeing is a lifelong quest, a journey of self-discovery, connection and empowerment. Success or failure depends on you and you alone. There are many roadblocks, challenges and surprises along the way, but this is not unique, this is LIFE itself. Exploring, discovering and taking risks are all part of the process. Gathering information, learning, sharing, comparing, implementing and making adjustments from time to time are necessary to steer oneself in the right direction. With more and more information, apps, noise, influencers and companies vying for your attention out there, it is becoming increasingly important to discern what is valuable and what is not. Worry less about what others are doing and pay more attention to what’s happening in your own life. Take care of your commitments and responsibilities and take care of yourSELF too!

I have really valued some ancient Toltec wisdom from a book called The 4 Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz, and he lists these 4 simple codes of conduct to live by:

  • Be impeccable with your word.
  • Don’t take anything personally.
  • Don’t make assumptions.
  • Always do your best.

Obviously, as with all things simplified, they must be taken within context of particular circumstances etc, it’s a nice little book to read if you come across a copy. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Yamas and Niyamas? If you practice yoga, you probably have! They are the first 2 limbs of the 8 fold Yogic path, next being asana (postures), pranayama, pratyahara, dhyana, dharana (meditative states) and samadhi (enlightenment). So, alongside our goals in health, nutrition, fitness and wellbeing, we benefit greatly from having morals and values, a systematic approach, a guidebook to living well so to speak. Yoga practice is one such path or method to gaining a deeper understanding of one-self. I’ll leave you with the list of Yamas (universal spirituality) and the Niyamas (personal observances). Study them, study yourself, hold yourself accountable, practice daily gratitude, care about others, the Earth, be kind, and take radical responsibility! Because if you don’t, who will? There’s no magic pill.

YAMAS

  • Ahimsa – non violence
  • Satya – Be honest, truthful
  • Asteya – Don’t take what is not yours
  • Bramacharya – Consciously direct your energy
  • Aparigraha – Avoid hoarding, greediness

NIYAMAS

  • Saucha – Cleanliness is important
  • Santosha – Effort to be content
  • Tapas – Do your best, enthusiasm
  • Svadhyaya – Study yourself
  • Isvara Pranidhana – Stay humble, trust

The power of MINDSET and its impact on our wellbeing

This week’s Wellbeing Wednesday we take a look at probably the MOST important aspect to making any gains and improvements to our health, both short and long term. We all want to be able to deal with life’s circumstances and overcome setbacks and difficulties, no matter what comes our way! Most of us would like to achieve this in a positive way, “glass half full” as opposed to empty… So which are you? Can you change your frame of mind? Your success OR failure is determined by it…

So, what is Mindset: A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations.

Your beliefs, shape your reality. Read that again. Developing a mindset is essential for us as humans to adapt and rise to the challenges of life. To build resilience and fortitude.

It influences how you think, FEEL and behave, it’s how you make sense of yourSELF and the WORLD around you. Leading researcher on the subject, Carol Dweck from Stanford University, says your mindset plays a pivotal role in what you want, and if you achieve success or not. Mindset influences HOW we behave (or react) in any given situation. Your assumptions, expectations, the way you SEE yourself and how you COPE in life are all impacted by mindset!

As Captain Jack Sparrow once said…

“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.”

So perhaps you’re reading this and it sounds a little like: oh well I am the way I am so guess I’m just doomed then! Or, It’ll be too hard, I couldn’t turn it around, it’s all too overwhelming… Well guess what??? You can CHANGE your mindset over time, especially if it’s not serving you. A lot of what we do, day to day in our regular lives is done on autopilot, we often pay little attention to how we react and engage. So let’s go a little deeper. There are 2 types of mindsets; fixed, and growth.

A FIXED mindset is more primal and resistant to change, even if new experiences disprove their beliefs. These are people less likely to take chances or believe in their ability to perform better in various aspects of their life.

A GROWTH mindset is more fluid and open to change. These people are less likely to define themselves, and are more likely to embrace challenges from a place of optimism rather than fear.

Here are some examples of each so you can identify them, work on it, and improve your responses and outcomes. Change of mindset begins with awareness.

FIXED: If I don’t try, then I won’t fail… That job position is totally out of my league. That’s just who I am, I can’t change it! Well that’s it, my business failed, I won’t try that again!

GROWTH: I only fail when I stop trying… That job position looks challenging, let me apply for it. I’m a constantly evolving work in progress! Well, my business failed this time, I’ve learned a lot from it, I will keep working on it and try again with a new plan!

So what are some things you could do to begin to change your frame of mind?

  • Pay attention to your words and thoughts
  • Stop seeking validation from others to prove your worth
  • Take on more challenges, and don’t give up on things so easily
  • Challenge yourself with new experiences and perspectives to improve neuroplasticity
  • See your stress response as helpful rather than a problem
  • Break down large tasks into chunks and complete 1 thing at a time
  • Have a clear intention/direction/goal
  • Have intense focus, don’t allow yourself to waste time or get distracted
  • Sustain the effort, for an extended period of time
  • Identify your motivations, are they coming from envy, desire, fear or love?
  • Get deep sleep/rest
  • Practice mindfulness and meditation
  • Adjust as you go, just keep going!

Self-awareness is at the root of self-mastery – when you want something or want to do something, ask yourself WHY first.

Ever hear the saying; “what you believe you receive”? Well studies have shown that mindset affects physiology. Our mindset therefore is very much connected to the placebo and nocebo effect, which I won’t go much into here, that’s a whole other interesting topic of discussion! Think about professional athletes, they will tell you, protein powders and training aside, it all comes down to building mental strength and resilience, THAT finds you the extra edge to succeed and win the race. (Even if your competitor is, you!)

What I would like to just point out before I close off for today’s post, make sure you’re not burning the candle at both ends! Incorporate restorative practices, self-care rituals, dinner dates and morning sleep in’s into your regular routine. BALANCE is key. Yes YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! It’s also OK to take a day off, eat a pizza and stay in your PJ’s all day! Connect with your heart to know your truth.

There’s a lot more on mindset I could get into, but start here, with this, NOW, take an interest in your health and wellbeing. And remember, it’s about what you DO, not what you HAVE…

Massage Therapy and wellbeing benefits for body & mind…

This week’s topic of focus for Wellbeing Wednesday is massage therapy. Having lived in Thailand for almost a year now, I have found that having a weekly Thai oil massage has been such an amazing addition to my overall health and wellbeing! So, let’s take a further look at the history, development, techniques and benefits of massage, for not only the physical body but the mind and nervous system too.

You’re only 1 massage away from a good mood!

Evidence of massage dates back to around 2300BC and has been found in many ancient civilizations including China, India, Greece, Rome, Egypt, Korea and Mesopotamia.

BC 2330: The Tomb of Akmanthor (also known as “The Tomb of the Physician”) in Saqqara, Egypt, depicts two men having work done on their feet and hands, possibly massage.

BC 722–481: The Huangdi Nei-jing is a compilation of medical knowledge known up to that date and is the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine. Massage is referred to in 30 different chapters of the Nei Jing. It specifies the use of different massage techniques and how they should be used in the treatment of specific ailments, and injuries.

BC 500: According to the Buddhist Pali Canon, Jivaka Komarabhacca an Indian with extraordinary medical skills, who is said to have been the Buddha’s physician, is sometimes credited with founding and developing a style of massage that led to the type of massage practiced in current-day Thailand.

BC 300: Charaka Samhita (sometimes dated to 800 BCE) is one of the oldest of the three ancient treatises of Ayurvedic medicine, including massage. Sanskrit records indicate that massage had been practiced in India long before the beginning of recorded history.

Massage Therapy has continued to develop and evolve around the world, alongside the medical sciences into the variety of methods and techniques used today.

Some of the methods you may be familiar with: Swedish, deep tissue, Ayurvedic, hot stone, Shiatsu, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, myofascial release, sports massage, aromatherapy and of course, Thai Yoga massage.

THAI MASSAGE Is one of the many drawcards for tourists visiting Thailand. A little more complex than being the creation of just 1 man, it is a combination of influences from Indian and Southeast Asian traditions of medicine, and the art as it is practiced today is likely to be the product of a 19th-century synthesis of various healing traditions from all over the kingdom of Thailand.

Wat Pho in Bangkok has been the center of Thai Traditional Medicine and massage for centuries and was registered in 1955 as the first such school to offer courses in Thai massage, Medical practice, Pharmacy and Midwife-nurse.

A little different from other methods, the patient lies on a bed on the floor, fully clothed, and as opposed to rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, stretched, pulled and rocked, using the hands, elbows, forearms and feet.

We mostly associate massage with being therapeutic and relaxing; think dim lights, candles, essential oils and soft music… However, the power of touch as a healing modality has many other medicinal benefits as well.

BENEFITS:

  • Relieves joint stiffness and pain
  • Increases flexibility and range of motion
  • Relieves headaches
  • Eases stress, anxiety & depression
  • Revives/increases energy

  • Can promote the release of built up toxins
  • Improves posture
  • Increases oxygen supply to muscles
  • Helps with insomnia

So, with all these wonderful benefits for both body and mind, why not treat yourself to regular, weekly massages and FEEL the difference for yourself! Welcome to “Wellbeing Wednesdays”…

A weekly post/short blog on topics of all things related to our Wellbeing as humans and of course, in relation to our beautiful planet Earth! So let’s begin with understanding what it is to “BE WELL”, and how do we get there…

Wellbeing: The state of being happy, healthy or prosperous…

So what does it mean to be healthy?

The definition of health as defined by the WHO: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living; it is a positive concept, emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.

The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition.”

Our overall health and wellbeing are impacted by our physical, mental, spiritual, emotional and financial health, as well as genetic, social, cultural and environmental factors. One does not always have control over all the conditions and factors which affect our health, but we can take steps to make healthier choices, which, over time, with active participation and commitment, will improve our overall state of wellbeing.

Wellbeing encompasses quality of life and the ability of people and societies to contribute to the world with a sense of meaning and purpose. Healthy individuals and communities help to create active, thriving, sustainable societies who, in turn are more resilient and able to respond to challenges, health threats and environmental disasters…

Being healthy doesn’t only include what we eat and how much we exercise, it’s so much more! It also encompasses what we allow to dwell in our minds and how we engage in our own self-care. With seemingly less and less time on our hands these days, it is even more important to be mindful of HOW we spend our time and WHO we spend it with. Prioritize and set aside the time to get creative, spend time in nature, find hobbies and people that FULFILL you and spark joy! Try to find better balance in your life and take steps and actions that make you FEEL whole and enhance your overall wellbeing. Here are a few ideas to get you started, or back on track if you fell off the wagon as they say!

  • Set some achievable, realistic goals and have a plan to get there
  • Eat a balanced, nutritious diet full of fruit, veg & protein & limit processed foods
  • Move your body for 30 mins a day (find something you enjoy, or it’s harder to stick to)
  • Manage your stress levels with a daily meditation/breathwork practice
  • Get enough, quality sleep
  • Limit alcohol use and avoid smoking
  • Drink enough water
  • Maintain good personal hygiene
  • Be kind, patient and compassionate with yourself, and others (it’s a process not a race)
  • Ask for help or seek professional advice where needed
  • Spend time in nature and with friends or family
  • Practice daily gratitude

Good health starts with YOU, be IN it, get involved, you can change your story! Actively empower yourself with continued learning, trial and error. Keep it simple, stay humble, get the basics right and continue from there… Your health is your WEALTH!
